In the Oshikoto Region, Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi has described the demolition of community structures by the Roads Authority (RA) along the Engoyi-Omuntele road as never approved and done without consulting his office. Nekundi made the remarks during a surprise visit to the Roads Authority's Oshikoto Maintenance Office in Omuthiya.
The minister's visit followed complaints from Omuntele residents over the demolition of community structures.
Nekundi expressed concern that the directive was issued without consultation with either the shareholders or himself as the principal accountable officer.
He immediately ordered a halt to all demolitions, instructing the Roads Authority to install speed control bumps and high curbs instead of destroying properties.
Nekundi directed that all community members whose properties had already been demolished must be compensated per the government compensation policy.
During his inspection of the Engoyi-Omuntele road construction, the minister stressed the need to complete the project by the 30th of September as scheduled.
The project was, however, delayed as the minister was briefed due to conflicts related to NamWater pipelines and allegations of manipulated laboratory results by the consulting engineer.
Nekundi said his office will consult with the Minister of Agriculture, Water, Forestry, and Land Reform for a solution.
On the alleged manipulation of test results, the minister issued a stern warning, describing the act as "unethical and inappropriate," and raised the possibility of blacklisting professionals involved in misconduct.
He instructed that immediate action be taken against the responsible consultant and that the government be reimbursed for any losses incurred.
A full report on the action taken is expected to be presented to him next week.
