The town of Gobabis in the Omaheke Region became the centre of national engagement and regional solidarity as it hosted the official commemoration of Africa Day of Decentralization and Local Development.
This year’s event was celebrated under the continental theme “Building Resilient Communities through Inclusive Decentralization and Equitable Development.”
The event drew together regional governors, local authority leaders, Chief Regional Officers (CROs), town Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), and representatives from across Namibia’s 14 regions. Inhabitants of the Omaheke Region also turned out in numbers, participating in the vibrant and insightful programme that underscored the importance of community-rooted development.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of James Sankwasa, the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, was Evelyn !Nawases-Taeyele the Deputy Minister of Urban and Rural Development, who emphasized that decentralization is not merely a governance tool but a catalyst for empowering local communities, fostering equitable access to resources, and creating tailored solutions for regional development challenges. She further highlighted the need for inclusive planning, participatory governance, and capacity building at grassroots level.
The commemorative activities included panel discussions, cultural performances, and exhibitions showcasing developmental projects driven by local authorities and traditional leaders.
Omaheke Region's Governor Pijoo Nganate, noted that hosting this year’s commemoration was both a privilege and an opportunity to put a spotlight on the region's ongoing efforts in promoting sustainable local governance and resilience.
The Africa Day of Decentralization and Local Development is annually observed by the African Union to promote good governance, grassroots participation, and the strengthening of local institutions in pursuit of the continent’s Agenda 2063.
The host for next year’s Africa Day of Decentralization and Local Development is the Kavango East Region.
