The Erongo Region Police have confiscated N$3 million worth of drugs since the beginning of the year.
This was announced by the Head of the Crime Investigation Division, Erastus Iikuyu, at an event hosted by the Coastal Drug Awareness Campaign at Walvis Bay.
"This year alone, from January to July 2025, we managed to register 138 cases and confiscate drugs with a street value of N$3,009,478, with 213 suspects arrested."
Of the 213 arrests, 195 are Namibian males, while 18 are foreign nationals.
Iikuyu said the large number of people moving to the region has increased drastically since 2011, making the crime rate skyrocket.
"Most people who are coming into this region end up not getting the opportunities, and they resort to committing serious crimes such as armed robberies, murder, rape, housebreaking, stock theft, cyber fraud and also illicit drug-related offences, which is the topic of the day."
Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu explained that the police, despite challenges, remain steadfast in their fight against drugs.
"I must indicate to you that the dealing or selling of drugs is categorised as a concealed crime. Are we aware of that? Which can only be detected when the police strategies are effective enough; otherwise, it's very difficult to get those drugs."
Erongo Governor Nathalia |Goagoses applauded the police for combating drug abuse in the region.
"About three million worth of this destroying substance, so meaning our police in this region are doing wonders, may the good Lord, commissioner."
She encouraged the youth not to be easily influenced into using drugs and to learn to say no.
"You can say no to drugs, actually. No, no, never! No to drugs. You can inspire your friend to stay in school. Get away from those drug houses, and stay in school."
The Coastal Drug Awareness Campaign is a non-profit community development initiative aimed at raising awareness on the use of harmful substances.
