The Bridge of Hope Committee is holding a campaign advocating for the construction of a safe pedestrian bridge between Ongulumbashe and One Nation in the |Khomas Region's Tobias Hainyeko Constituency.

The community leaders say the current bridge is unstable and has already claimed multiple lives.

Through this initiative, the campaign aims to mobilise at least 100 residents through a petition and to empower the Ongulumbashe community to demand lasting change.

The founder of the Bridge of Hope Committee, Ingrid Kapapero, said this initiative was launched after seeing the dangers of the bridge in Ongulumbashe, where women, children, and the elderly cross daily.

"We couldn't just stand by and watch them risk their lives. So we decided to come up with this programme where we advocate for the people from Ongulumbashe and also One Nation, requesting a safer bridge. So all we want is just for the viewers and also the public to spread awareness, share our story and also donate if they can."

A concerned citizen, Mathilde Ukeva, said the riverbed has claimed many lives, especially during the rainy season.

She emphasised that the bridge is a hazard for everyone, including children who are struggling to get to school safely.

Another request high on the list is high mast lights for the area, which residents say is unsafe in the dark.

NBC News reached out to the City of Windhoek for a response to these queries, but has yet to receive a reply since our last inquiry.
