Ten out of 24 suspected measles cases have tested positive in the Kunene Region.

Since the first confirmed measles case in Opuwo, on August 21 this year, additional suspected and confirmed cases have been reported.

In a speech delivered on her behalf at Opuwo during the commemoration of World Patient Safety Day, Health Minister Dr. Esperance Luvindao said a team of health workers was on the ground.

They have activated emergency response measures, including isolation and treatment of patients, intensified surveillance, active case investigation, and ringed vaccination around affected areas.

Following the declaration of a measles outbreak, Dr. Luvindao said there will be supplementary vaccination campaigns for the whole Opuwo District, covering children from 6 months to 15 years.

Vaccination has started, with a target of reaching 28,000 children with the measles vaccine and Vitamin A.

13 vaccination teams are expected to be deployed to cover the whole Opuwo District during that period, ending in October.

"The community in Opuwo district is hereby urged to cooperate with health workers during the vaccination campaign and take all eligible children for vaccination. I therefore appeal to all parents and guardians to ensure that their children are fully immunised against measles and rubella, as vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against this disease."

44 nurses are also expected to be deployed to assist with the vaccination.

Community leaders, schools and churches are called on to support the Ministry's efforts by encouraging families to take their children to the nearest facilities for vaccinations.
