Rainstorms caused extensive damage to houses in Kabbe South and North, as well as some parts of Katima Rural constituencies in the Zambezi Region, on Sunday.

The storm destroyed houses, uprooting trees and dropping water tanks from their mountings.

The headman of the Namalubi area, Eric Lyanabu Imukusi, called on the Zambezi Regional Council to come to the rescue of residents of Namalubi, Mpoola, and Lisikili, amongst others.

He called on the government to assist them.

"Most houses had their roofs blown away yesterday afternoon. Some do not have a roof over their heads and no place to sleep, their house contents have been soaked, and some zinc roofs are coiled. It is a challenge; we do not know what to do. We appeal to NGOs and those who can assist to help the stranded community members even with accommodation or food; most food got wet and was wasted."

Nakwezi Kwala from Mpoola Village estimates the damage to her house, that of her mother's and of other residents in the village at no less than N$100,000.

She appealed for assistance in the form of shelter while calling on the regional council to properly assess the damage.

"We request assistance from the government. Today as we speak we are going to overnight outside like we did last night since the storm took place yesterday. We were sitting in the chairs the whole night; hence, we request assistance from the government to sympathise with us and see how to assist us. Even tents will help because our belongings are going to be soaked again as the sky shows the same situation."

Contacted for comment, Kabbe North Constituency Councillor Bernard Sisamu confirmed the rain damage to households in the Kabbe and Katima Rural constituencies to be extensive.

Sisamu said he visited numerous families and villages throughout the morning.

He is worried that with the rain season just starting, more property damage is likely.

Sisamu confirmed that his office is busy assessing the damage and will take the necessary measures to relieve the storm victims.
