The Gobabis Municipality, in collaboration with the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, is set to roll out prepaid water and electricity provision to its residents; these projects should be completed before the end of the 2025/2026 financial year.
The town's Public Relations Officer, Frederick Ueitele, revealed this in an interview with NBC News.
Ueitele said the town is battling to settle millions of dollars owed to NamWater and NamPower dating back five years.
This, he adds, has forced the council to find a new alternative for introducing prepaid service provision in the town.
Ueitele added that more than 60% of households in Gobabis are on conventional water and electricity provision.
"Hopefully, with the new arrangement, we look forward to mitigating the situation. We don't want a situation where people who are paying will suffer because of disconnection from NamWater or NamPower."
On housing provision, Ueitele said through the Build Together project, 35 houses were constructed, with 53 serviced plots also available for new ownership.
The ongoing informal settlement upgrades at Kanaan C are temporarily on hold due to some technicalities, but they're working on the matter and are set to resume early next month.
