The Namibian government has taken another major step in addressing the persistent water scarcity challenges facing the Kunene Region with the official commissioning of the Ohamaremba-Okanguati Water Supply Pipeline.
The N$25 million project was inaugurated by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, Inge Zaamwani, at a ceremony held in Ohamaremba Village.
Minister Zaamwani emphasised that the newly completed pipeline not only provides water for household consumption but also creates opportunities for small-scale horticulture and backyard gardening, potentially enhancing food security and local livelihoods.
The Minister also highlighted that during the 2024-2025 financial year, the government successfully drilled and installed 22 new water points, constructed one short pipeline, and built three earth dams in the Kunene Region. Another earth dam project is currently underway and expected to be completed by the end of the financial year.
Zaamwani urged the regional leadership to collaborate with traditional leaders, stating that "traditional leaders play an important role in development; if they are unwilling to cooperate with the government, that community will be excluded from progress. But as we have seen and witnessed today, because of their involvement and the support of our esteemed traditional leaders, this has been made possible."
Kunene Regional Governor Vipuakuje Muharuka stated that the day marks a major step forward in bringing clean, safe, and accessible water to all Namibians, especially those in the Kunene Region.
"Today's event is the turning of a new chapter in the story of dignity, health, and opportunity for our communities. This milestone embodies the government of the Republic of Namibia's unwavering commitment to equitable development—ensuring that no Namibian, regardless of where they live, is left behind in pursuit of clean, safe, and accessible water. In the Kunene Region, water is not just a necessity – it is a matter of survival. For too long, our rural communities have endured the harshness of dry seasons and the challenges of unreliable water sources."
Local leaders and residents expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a life-changing development that will bring lasting benefits to the region, and still look forward to the fulfilment of other requests they've put in, like electricity and a proper network for Ohamaremba.
