The Swapo Party hosted the elders of Katutura Central at what it termed a "Silver Day" luncheon.

Former First Lady Monica Geingos delivered a message calling for renewed respect, responsibility and unity within families.

Geingos delivered a candid and compassionate address during the event held at Katutura Community Hall, highlighting the growing pressures faced by senior citizens.

She expressed concern over young people misusing pension money intended for the elderly, warning that such behaviour exploits the vulnerable and erodes the moral fabric of families.

Geingos further spoke about the challenges many children face at home – seeking help with homework from elders who, despite their willingness, often struggle with limited literacy.

She emphasised that these difficulties are compounded by harsh social circumstances, especially in households where some youth pretend to attend school when in reality they do not.

She called on communities to address these issues collectively, urging parents, guardians, and youth to re-establish trust, enhance communication, and prioritise education.

Safeguarding the well-being of elders and supporting children's learning, she says, are essential pillars for a stronger Katutura Central.

Geingos concluded with words of appreciation for the elders, whose resilience, guidance, and sacrifices, she said, continue to anchor the community.
