The government has invested N$88 million in the 2024/2025 financial year for the second phase of development of the Luderitz Waterfront.
This was revealed during the Parliament Standing Committee on Economy, Industry, Public Administration and Planning's oversight visit to the southern coastal town of Luderitz.
Luderitz Waterfront Development Business Executive Simeon Kanime told the committee funds were utilised to complete construction of the Maritime Museum, Sea View Restaurant and Gym, as well as the first phase of NUST.
"Materials are mostly transported from Windhoek, and we also need skilled labour from outside, which increases costs. Despite these challenges, the funds have been put to good use, and the projects are already creating a positive impact."
Kanime said the redevelopment of the Old Power Station serves as an economic hub for Lüderitz.
"We have a Welwitschia vessel that is still in the ocean that was donated to the Lüderitz Waterfront by the government. The plan is to put it out and put it at its lasting resting place where it will be repurposed into something useful and kept safe by Namport in that area, and they are doing it for free for us, but it's costly on a daily basis. We also have a jetty at phase 1 of the waterfront; the foot of the jetty is deteriorating, and it's mostly used by tourists, and these are high-value cost projects."
