Former National Youth Council (NYC) Secretary General Juliet Kavetuna has called on youth organisations to be more active and responsible.
She made these remarks during the NYC engagement meeting in the capital.
Kavetuna shared her own leadership experience and encouraged young people to get involved in governance.
"My call is that maybe we should be able to look at how we really create that crop of young people from all representation to make sure that they have the capacity that can change their trajectory and also that can bring about some, some powerful representation and transformation in our, our, our, our community."
She also says that even if resources are limited, organisations should work together to find ways to support young people.
One of the NYC founders, Uhuru Dempers, agreed that youth organisations should share ideas and work together to build a stronger youth movement.
"I don't want us to take NYC to its former glory. I want us to take NYC to glories that it has never seen. Because as a founding member, I can say I've always wondered and had the desire that NYC can be much, much more than it ever has been. And therefore, as we discuss the way forward, let's not talk about the present; let's dream about a future institution that can help young people to transform not only the lives of the youth but also transform Indian society. "
Dempers encouraged young people to maintain high moral standards and come up with new ideas to empower their peers.
Looking ahead, the NYC's interim executive chairperson, Patience Masua, says the organisation plans to improve youth programmes across the country, focusing on skills development, partnerships, and accountability.
"So we are turning the page. As an institution, we will strengthen our institutional capacity to support our affiliates directly. We will dedicate staff members that will be assigned at headquarters to work specifically with affiliate organisations to ensure regular engagements with affiliate organisations, engagements such as this, to provide technical support to affiliate organisations, to assist affiliate organisations with compliance requirements and to strengthen programme coordination."
NYC plans to improve access to funding to ensure affiliates receive funding and strengthen support for youth organisations and provide guidance.
