Parents of learners at Golden Hills Primary School in Windhoek's Goreangab residential area are threatening to boycott and lock the gates should the government replace the current acting principal, Leah Iyambo.

Speaking to NBC News, the chairperson of the school board, Keshia Gamatham, said the contract of acting principal Iyambo had lapsed on April 21st.

However, the board stated it was agreed that her term be extended until the end of May.

Gamatham said there is no clear communication from the Ministry of Education, and the board was only informed that the principal's position was advertised and that there will be a new principal.

The board recommends confirming the acting principal, who founded the school.

"The community believes that since the teacher essentially founded the school from scratch, she had no resources on the first day, but she continued. She started the school. The community feels it is only fair; it is only right for her to continue her leadership with the school."

One of the parents, Johanna Kashihalua, said they will lock the gates should another principal step onto the school premises.

She mentioned that when the school was established, the initial principal declined to take on the role, reportedly claiming that the school resembled a farm. However, Iyambo stepped up to accept the responsibilities of principal.

"We are not going to allow this. We want the directors and Steenkamp to come to the school so they can talk to us. We are not agreeing; we have been sitting with Iyambo under that tree from the beginning."

Another parent, Namasiku Sibuku, said Iyambo's departure will not only affect the school but learners as well.

The |Khomas Education Director, Paulus Nghikembua, said his office was not aware of the situation at the school.

The school has over 600 learners with 20 permanent teachers.

According to the board, the school has been operating without government assistance since it started in April last year and survived on donor funding.
