The Livestock and Livestock Products Board of Namibia held a climate-smart beef initiative engagement, focusing on how farmers can improve the quality and productivity of their meat-producing livestock through the Beef Genomics Programme phase 3.

The acting CEO of the Livestock and Livestock Products Board of Namibia (LLPBN), Goliath Tujendapi, stressed the importance of implementing and running the beef genomics programme and highlighted the inclusivity of all breeds.

"So, in my opinion, it is essential for someone to take responsibility for hosting or managing this programme. I believe that the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform should take the lead. However, regarding the overall coordination of the programme, the ministry could consider outsourcing to its agents to determine the most effective approach. The programme must be inclusive; if we aim to enhance our genetics in this country, it should not be limited to just one breed but should encompass all breeds."

The Deputy Executive Director in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, Kingsley Kwenani, reiterated the importance of the Beef Genomics Programme to Namibia's meat market.

"The beef genomics programme is very important to Namibia, particularly in the livestock sector. As you are aware, climate change has significantly impacted our livestock sector; therefore, with this programme, we should be able to test for breeds that will provide us with quality that is resistant to the current challenges we are facing, including the extended droughts in Namibia. This will enable us to start testing and providing good-quality breeds that can withstand the harsh conditions we are experiencing."

The Beef Genomics Programme is a livestock improvement programme that uses genetic technology to help farmers breed healthier, more productive, and climate-resilient cattle with better meat quality.
