A Namibian truck driver who was allegedly hijacked at gunpoint in South Africa has safely returned home after being located by South African authorities.
NBC reached out to Commissioner Reinhard !Haoseb, Namibia's Police attaché at the Namibian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa.
He confirmed that Namibian truck driver Andoran Beukes, who was reported missing after a hijacking on the N4 near Johannesburg on Friday, has been found and reunited with his employer.
However, the truck is still missing.
“This morning, on Sunday, it was confirmed that he successfully received emergency travel documents from the mission, through the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration attaché. As we speak, he is approaching the Namibian border. In short, he was hijacked after being stopped—possibly by a traffic officer or someone pretending to be one. He was then forced into a smaller vehicle, while the truck was left behind. He was blindfolded and taken to an unknown location. He is not sure exactly where he was held. He said they drove for a while, and it appears they were taking him towards Silverton, close to a police station. He was eventually dumped there. Fortunately, he sustained no injuries and is happy to be back home.”
Commissioner !Haoseb confirmed that authorities from both countries had been engaged following media reports about the incident and that Beukes had safely returned home.
The circumstances surrounding the hijacking remain under investigation by South African authorities.
