Landless People's Movement MP Utaara Mootu questioned the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform on when they intend to table the report on the Commission of Inquiry on Ancestral Land Rights, initiated by late President Hage Geingob in 2018.
Land Reform Deputy Minister Ruthy Masake said that many suggestions from the Commission of Inquiry about ancestral land rights and restitution have already been added to current policies and laws.
She said a prohibition on the acquisition of agricultural land by foreign nationals was included in the land deal before the second national land conference was convened.
"The Commission advocated for the comprehensive review of the current land reform policies and programmes to promote equitable access to land and safeguard land rights and tenure. These recommendations are now reflected in both the land bill and the reviewed national resettlement policies for 2023."
She further stated that the report was submitted directly to the President, who serves as the appointing authority, adding that the responsibility to disclose findings lies with the relevant legislative body and not with the ministry.
Masake says the Ministry is preparing to share a progress report regarding the implementation of the resolution from the second National Land Conference with the public soon.
