This year's Heroes Day commemoration, 26 August, will take place at the Heroes' Acre in the Khomas Region.

Information and Communication Technology Minister Emma Theofelus made the announcement during a Government Information Centre update from Outapi in the Omusati Region.

Theofelus highlighted that this year's Heroes Day will be commemorated under the theme "Built on Bravery, Bound for a Prosperous Future."

“Their legacy continues to guide us as we work together to build a prosperous future for generations to come. The 2026 Heroes' Day commemorations will begin with a deeply moving and historic occasion. On 24 August 2026, seven of our fallen freedom fighters will be accorded the dignity and honour they so richly deserve through reburial at the Heroes' Acre.”

The heroes include: Ellaser Tuhadeleni known as Kahumba Kandola, Hafeni Immanuel Shifidi, Nduuvu Filemon Nangolo, Simon Petrus Nillenge, Festus Nehale, Tobias Hainyeko, Brendan Simbwaye and Nathaniel Maxuilili.

She explained that for many families and fellow Namibians, the solemn occasion represents more than a ceremonial reburial.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will also bestow national honours to more than 1,000 deserving individuals.

The President, Theofelus noted, is also expected to confer National Hero status upon Cornelius Shimwaafeni, a courageous 16-year-old boy from Omutundungu village in the Omusati region, who risked his own life earlier this year to save nine-month-old twins from drowning in a water pond.
