Elderly residents of Donkerhoek in Katutura have received winter relief support through a humanitarian programme led by the Office of the Khomas Regional Council.

As winter temperatures continue to affect vulnerable communities, elderly residents of Donkerhoek are among those receiving assistance aimed at easing the impact of the season.
The initiative, organised in partnership with the Donkerhoek Social Club, saw 105 beneficiaries receive blankets and food parcels containing essential household items.

The programme is funded by the Embassy of China.

Chinese Ambassador to Namibia Zhao Weiping explained.

“We, the Embassy, should provide some help to our friends in the Khomas Region. So then we decided to make this donation to our elders in this community. And as the honourable governor said, this is indeed a very small, very small donation. But we do hope it will bring some warmth to our friends in need.”

Khomas Regional Governor Sam Nujoma noted that the initiative reflects the importance of caring for elderly citizens and ensuring they are not left behind during the winter months.

"The Chinese Embassy in Namibia is helping us by providing equipment, even to the Namibian Police. Last week, we sent 12 of our doctors, including specialists, to China. They are currently there for a one-month specialised training programme. We are implementing many programmes together with them, and they will return with new technology and knowledge from these programmes. These initiatives are part of the Memoranda of Understanding that we signed when I visited China last year. We are now sending our people to benefit from these opportunities. On top of that, which is also very close to my heart, we are working on matters concerning our elders."

A beneficiary, Ada Shiimi expressed her gratitude to the Chinese government.

“There is a saying in Oshiwambo – if you are not thankfull you will end up stealing. We are really thankfull for the gifts, because Namibia and China are working together.”
