President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has described former President Nangolo Mbumba as a distinguished son of Namibia, a veteran of the liberation struggle, an elder statesman and a devoted servant of the Namibian people as he celebrates his 85th birthday.

In a message marking the milestone, President Nandi-Ndaitwah said the former head of state's 85th birthday represents more than the passage of years, offering an opportunity to reflect on a life closely connected to Namibia's journey from the liberation struggle to independence and the subsequent building of the Republic.

She said Mbumba belonged to a generation of Namibians who answered the call of history when freedom was not guaranteed and service to the country demanded profound personal sacrifice. 

Dr Nangolo Mbumba committed himself to the liberation struggle through the Swapo Party and contributed to the collective efforts that ultimately ended colonial oppression and paved the way for Namibia's independence in 1990. 

Following independence, Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah said Mbumba continued to serve the country by taking on significant responsibilities in government and contributing to the establishment, development and strengthening of Namibia's democratic institutions.

She pointed out his loyalty, humility, discipline, steadiness and commitment to duty as qualities that have remained consistent throughout his public life. 

The President further recalled Mbumba's assumption of the Presidency following the death of Namibia's third President, Dr. Hage Geingob, describing it as one of the most difficult moments in the country's recent history. 

At a time of national grief and uncertainty, Mbumba assumed the responsibilities of the Presidency with calmness, dignity and a strong sense of constitutional duty.

Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah said his priority was to preserve the continuity of Namibia's constitutional democracy and guide the grieving nation through an unprecedented transition. 

She noted that Mbumba once again demonstrated his willingness to place the interests of the country before his own. 

As Mbumba marks 85 years, President Nandi-Ndaitwah said the country is celebrating not only his birthday but also his decades of sacrifice, patriotism and service.
