The Speaker of the Children's Parliament, Jane Phiri, has urged the youth to take pride in the country's history and be more involved in commemorating fallen heroes ahead of the commemoration of Heroes Day.
Phiri called on the youth not only to embrace the freedom they enjoy today but also to continue telling the stories of Namibia's heroes and what impact they had for generations to come.
"As a young person, I'd like to say our importance lies within the fact that we should have young meetings where we tell the young people about what happened during the fight, the heroes who fought for us, who they were, and what their role was that they played within the fight for us to independence, to our freedom. Not only that, but publish. It goes back into publishing books and writing about these heroes because we tend to forget certain things we are told, but we tend to remember certain things we read as young people."
She encouraged schools to come up with innovative ways to educate the youth about Heroes Day.
"So our importance lies within getting educated at school, having these small groups in schools and in our communities, and coming together once on Heroes Day. And as young people role-play these scenarios, have these story tales where we're sitting around a fire and tell the young people, especially with our elders."
