Older persons are valuable sources of knowledge, wisdom and experience.

Communities have therefore been urged during the celebration of Older Persons Day at Muyako Village in the Katima Mulilo Rural Constituency to recognise their contribution to society.

Speaking on behalf of the Katima Mulilo Rural Constituency Councillor, Control Administrator Kamwi Sinvula, said the celebration was not only an opportunity to honour older persons but also to listen, to respect and to recognise their role in families and communities.

"our older persons are living libraries of knowledge, experience and wisdom; they have raised families, built communities, preserved traditions, guided young generations and contributed to the development of our region and country. Many of the values we continue to teach our children today - respect, responsibility, cooperation, resilience and community spirit - have been passed down to us by our elders."

Sinvula said this year's theme, "Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives", highlights that people are living longer.

Sinvula stressed that ageing should not only be viewed through the lens of dependence or vulnerability but should also recognise the strength, knowledge, experience and capabilities of older persons.

The event also brought together representatives from Hope of Life, an organisation dedicated to supporting and encouraging older persons.

Its founder, Iuze Nzwile, said growing older should be viewed positively.

"We encourage our elderly in life to show them what life is; getting old is not a bad thing nor is it a sin, but getting old is the biggest blessing from God."

She encouraged the youth and communities not to abandon older persons but to assist them in improving their day-to-day lives.
