OHANGWENA RETAILERS FACE LABOUR VIOLATIONS

Most retail outlets in the Ohangwena Region are in breach of the Labour Act, particularly the national minimum wage regulations.

This emerged during an oversight visit by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Poverty Eradication, Labour and Industrial Relations.

Labour expert Herbert Jauch said that uniformed workers being excluded from the Labour Act is a draconian approach that contradicts the Constitution and Namibia's own Labour Act.

He believes there must be mechanisms for affected members to raise concerns collectively so that justice is done.

Designated employers threshold reduced

Employers with ten and more workers will now be required to inform the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation of any vacancies in their establishments.
