The Inspector General of the Namibian Police has confirmed to NBC News that one of the women who died in the Saturday accident, five kilometres outside Mariental, was pregnant.

Inspector General of the Namibian Police, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, has acknowledged that there is a motor vehicle challenge in the force.

MVA Fund's CEO Rosalia Martins-Hausiku has provided details on how the fund will assist the families of the Mariental accident victims with burial and medical care for survivors.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, Lucia Iipumbu, said a Quantum bus was available for the Namibia Correctional Service officials who died in the Mariental accident on Saturday.

She said it remains unclear why the officers were transported in a vehicle reserved for inmates.

The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund has confirmed that 20 people were involved in the Mariental car accident, with 16 fatalities.

The civil case in which Keetmanshoop magistrate Unchen Konjore is being sued for N$500,000 has been referred to mediation scheduled for September 19.

Political leaders have expressed condolences and called for urgent action following the fatal road accident near Mariental.

New High Court rules that came into effect on August 22 will now change how debts are collected, especially when people’s homes and salaries are involved. 

Under the new law, a person’s home cannot be sold to recover a debt unless a court first holds a hearing.
