Restrictions imposed following the detection of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in the Karasburg Veterinary District have been partially lifted, allowing certain livestock slaughter activities and the movement and trade of specified processed animal products across Namibia.

The country is confronted with Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) after being an FMD-free zone for nearly 60 years. 

Concentrated in the Karasburg farming district, the outbreak was detected at a farm in the area earlier this week. 

Following a recent outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in the Karasburg Veterinary District of the ||Kharas Region, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, through the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS), has released Veterinary Public Notification No. 16 of 2026. 

One of Namibia's biggest agricultural platforms, the Grootfontein Show, has continued without its traditional livestock exhibitions and auctions following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease.

Butcheries and retail outlets in Mariental remain well stocked with meat, despite reports that some other towns have run out of stock following restrictions imposed in response to the Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreak.

The government has intensified efforts to contain the Foot-and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak by setting up roadblocks in the Karasburg district to restrict movement of cloven-hoofed animals and raw animal products.

Seventeen cattle have tested positive for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) out of 199 samples collected as part of intensified surveillance following the detection of the disease in the Karasburg State Veterinary District.

The confirmation of Foot and Mouth Disease in the FMD-free zone comes just days before the Windhoek Industrial and Agricultural Show gets underway.

Meatco has suspended beef exports following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and restrictions and control measures introduced by the government.
