The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) returning officer in the Guinas Constituency by-election, Sion Shikufinde, says that by 15:00, over 1,000 voters had cast their votes out of more than 4,000 registered voters.

Two parties, namely the Swapo Party and the Landless People's Movement (LPM), are contesting the by-election.

Voting was described as quick in the morning but slowed down during the day at polling stations at Oshivelo Police Station, Farm Oshivelo, and Ondera Farm.

"So far, we are okay; the turnout is satisfactory, and we haven't experienced any significant technical issues. The process is smooth because we have two or three devices at some polling stations, so the voting is quite fast. Guinas is not one of the largest constituencies, so we didn’t expect a turnout as high as in other constituencies."

Shikufinde was hopeful that more voters would turn up before polling stations close tonight.

In total, there are nine polling stations in Guinas Constituency: five fixed and four mobile.

"We encountered a problem at one of our polling stations near Mokuti. When we arrived, they didn't allow our polling officials to enter, so we decided to set upa small mobile station outside. After a long conversation with management, they allowed us in, but only one person came to cast their vote."
