A resident of Ondangwa's Extension Two is calling on the town council to urgently address a persistent stench coming from a pump station located just ten metres from his home.
Franz Wechslberger (77), who has lived in the area since 1991, says he and his family have endured the unbearable smell of ammonia emanating from the station daily since 2000.
Despite numerous complaints, he says the council has failed to resolve the matter.
Wechslberger attributes the poor air quality to several health problems, including constant headaches and throat pain.
His wife died in February of this year from kidney failure, which he believes was worsened by the toxic air they had been breathing for years.
During the nbc News team’s visit to the area, the unpleasant odour was immediately noticeable.
Another concern of Wechslberger's is that blockages at the pump station often lead to sewage overflowing into his yard, contaminating the produce in his garden.
He appealed to the council for a permanent solution and suggested that even simply sealing the open manhole could reduce the emission of ammonia into the air.
In response, Ondangwa Town Council Public Relations Officer Petrina Shitalangaho confirmed that the council is aware of the issue and has contracted a company to repair broken manholes and address the faulty pump station raised by the complainant.
