The United States Department of State has placed Namibia under a Level 2 travel advisory and has encouraged its citizens to "exercise increased caution" when visiting the country due to rising incidents of crime and concerns related to health.

In its advisory updated December 2024, the U.S. State Department says Namibia has several security risks, particularly in urban areas and locations frequented by tourists.

According to the advisory, “Violent crime, such as home invasions, robberies, and assault, is becoming more common, especially in Windhoek and other major towns.”

The warning also draws attention to opportunistic thefts, stating, “Petty crimes such as pickpocketing, purse snatching, and ‘smash and grab’ thefts from vehicles are prevalent, especially near shopping centers and in public spaces.”

Health concerns, while not specified in detail, also contribute to the heightened caution recommended for travelers.

The advisory does not discourage travel to Namibia outright but encourages vigilance, particularly when moving around city centers, using public transportation, or staying in unsecured accommodation.

Other Southern African countries that are placed on Level 2 include South Africa and Zimbabwe, while Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, and Mauritius are placed at Level 1.

According to the U.S. State Department, Level 1 countries are safe destinations for U.S. citizens and represent a stable environment.
