Lady Justice Mavis Gibson, the first woman to serve on Namibia’s High Court, has been remembered as a trailblazer and a symbol of justice.
At a memorial held at St. George's Cathedral, friends, family and colleagues honoured her life of service and strength.
Born in Zimbabwe, Gibson was the first black woman appointed to Zimbabwe’s High Court. In 1995, she became the first woman judge on Namibia’s High Court.
She later broke another barrier in 1999 as the first woman Acting Judge of the Supreme Court.
Speakers at the memorial described her as firm, fair, and committed to justice. Chief Justice Peter Shivute remembered her humility and leadership.
In court, she was impartial and compassionate. Outside of it, she inspired many, especially young women.
Though she retired in 2008, her influence lives on through her legal judgments and lasting legacy.
