People, especially those living in rural areas, are being called upon to take an active role in controlling desertification and mitigating the effects of drought.
This call to action was made during the commemoration of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, held at Outapi in the Omusati Region.
The event was organised by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism under the theme "Restoration and Land: Unlocking Opportunities".
Rural communities are encouraged to reduce their reliance on natural wood, especially sticks for building houses.
Instead, the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism urges them to use modern and sustainable building materials wherever possible to minimise desertification.
Additionally, it is vital to replace trees that have been cut down and plant more in areas where vegetation has been lost.
This helps prevent soil erosion and supports the restoration of degraded land and soil across Namibia.
Omusati Governor Erginus Endjala encouraged all citizens to partake in land restoration, a necessity to reclaim the future.
Timoteus Mufeti, the Environmental Commissioner, delivered the speech of Environment, Forestry and Tourism Minister Indileni Daniel.
