The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare recently launched a Child-Friendly Material based on the Child Care and Protection Act.
The initiative aims to empower children with a clear understanding of their rights and the mechanisms available to safeguard them.
The primary objective of the initiative is to give effect to the rights of children as enshrined in the Constitution as well as international instruments that Namibia ratified.
The Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Emma Kantema, in her ministerial address, explained that the ministry has embarked on the initiative to ensure that the provisions of these legal instruments are made accessible and comprehensible to the children.
Dr. Kantema said it also reflects the government's commitment to fostering an enabling environment where every Namibian child can flourish, free from harm and with unfettered access to essential services.
The materials developed consist of social media graphics, posters, pamphlets, booklets offering more detailed information, videos, and radio dramas.
She said the child-friendly material clearly defines what constitutes harmful practices, enabling children to identify as well as to report such instances and seek assistance.
Often rooted in traditional beliefs, these practices manifest in various forms, including child labour, harmful initiation rites, bullying, religious practices, and the use of alcohol and drugs.
Dr. Kantema stressed that by presenting the law in an accessible format, it will equip children with the language and understanding to articulate their experiences and to demand the protection they rightfully deserve.
