The Minister of Transport and Works, Veikko Nekundi, has highlighted the significance of infrastructure development in ensuring communities have access to essential services.
He made the remarks while officiating at the inauguration of the rehabilitated Homs River Bridge in Warmbad in the ||Kharas Region.
The Homs River Bridge has been rehabilitated for N$18.7 million to improve infrastructure in the area.
During rainy seasons, the bridge had often been submerged by floodwaters, cutting off access for residents and travellers.
"True development is measured not by the structure we build, but the opportunities we create, the lives we touch and the hope we inspire. Today's celebrations represent thousands of journeys that will be safer, economic activities that will flourish and communities that will remain connected throughout the seasons."
The Acting CEO of the Roads Authority, Sidney Boois, said the road parastatal remains committed to ensuring that road infrastructure development benefits communities across the country.
"It is a well-known fact that many residents in this area have historically faced tough times during the rainy season, as flooding often made it difficult to reach schools, healthcare centres, and other essential services."
Also speaking at the occasion was Karasburg East Constituency Councillor Anseline Beukes, who commended the government, saying, "Honourable Minister, today I throw the ball into your hands on behalf of the Warmbad community for considering the road between Karasburg and Warmbad in your plans. We need a tarred road."
In response, Nekundi said the upgrading of the road is listed as a priority under the ||Kharas Region road master plan and appealed for patience. Members of the community welcomed the improved infrastructure.
"The bridge has officially opened today for the community, and we are thrilled. I urge fellow residents to take pride in it and protect it as their own."
