The family of the late Florence Nghifikwa, supported by community members, handed over a petition to State prosecutors at the Katutura Magistrate's Court opposing bail for Elias Shityeni, the man charged in connection with her murder.

At a time when the country continues to record brutal murders almost every month, the arrest of a suspect in Nghifikwa's case could be seen as a rare step toward accountability.

Elias Shityeni remains a suspect until the court pronounces itself.

Family and friends gathered at the Katutura Magistrate's Court, and Isabel Ndimbarukua, a cousin of the deceased, asked the court not to grant bail, citing concerns that the accused could interfere with witnesses, tamper with evidence, or endanger the community.

"We are here because justice delayed is justice denied. We are here because silence protects the guilty and punishes the innocent. We are here because Nghifikwa's life mattered, and we refuse to let her story fade into statistics or forgotten headlines. To those inside this court, we say these words with respect but with resolve. Do not let her death be in vain. Do not let another family stand where this one stands – broken, waiting, and begging to be heard. Let truth prevail. Let justice be done."

Nghifikwa was shot and killed on the 22nd of July in the Wanaheda area of Windhoek during what police described as an attempted armed robbery.

According to investigators, she and another person had gone to view a room for rent when they were ambushed by armed men.

Nghifikwa was fatally shot during the attack.

Police later arrested Elias Haifete, also known as Small Boy, among several suspects in a joint operation in the Lafrenz and Monte Christo areas.

Law enforcement officials said the suspects were linked to a series of armed robberies around Windhoek.

Firearms, knives, and balaclavas were recovered during the arrests.

The State has opposed bail and requested additional time for further investigations and for the accused to apply for legal aid.
