The Otjozondjupa Governor's Cup 2026 was officially launched on Tuesday in Otjiwarongo.
Leaders described it as an investment in youth development through sport.
The tournament aims to identify and develop young talent that will represent the region at the upcoming Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup in the //Kharas Region in April this year.
Speaking at the launch, which coincided with his birthday, Otjozondjupa Regional Governor John Julius Khamuseb said the tournament is more than just a competition. He described it as a platform for youth development.
He said education should not focus only on academics but must also include sports. He added that some learners who struggle in class may perform well in sports and, with exposure, can reach national and international levels.
"The reason for this Governor's Cup is that we want to develop the youth. Youth development must be holistic. We cannot give them only academic education but also sports education. Sometimes learners who do not perform well academically can perform well in sports and reach the international level. Think about a player like Hanamub, who became a national player. He was once unknown, but tournaments like these expose players to selectors. Therefore, this is a gateway for talent identification. Sport also brings communities together," Khamuseb said.
The governor said tournaments like this unite communities and give young athletes the opportunity to be seen by national selectors.
He also thanked sponsors who made the event possible.
He added, “We want more talent from the Otjozondjupa Region. We want our boys and girls to join national teams. I thank all the sponsors who supported us. Although we initially planned to host the event in March, we moved it to allow better preparation for the Namibian Newspaper Cup. With the support we received, we are able to host the tournament this weekend. I now officially launch the Governor's Cup 2026. ”.
Meanwhile, Otjiwarongo Constituency Councillor and Chairperson of the Regional Council, Paulus Nekundi, supported the governor's remarks.
He said sport promotes unity, discipline, and teamwork and helps keep young people away from negative influences. He also commended the Office of the Governor for organizing the tournament.
"Sport is very important, especially for our youth. It promotes unity and discipline. It helps bring children off the streets and keeps them busy. I commend the Office of the Governor for this initiative. It gives young people opportunities to be identified and to represent the region at higher levels. We must continue to promote sport at the constituency level," Nekundi said.
The tournament will include soccer and netball. It will take place at the Omulunga Stadium in Grootfontein from 27 February to 01 March, with all seven constituencies in the region expected to participate.
Each sport code will have two groups, and the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
