The Ondangwa Magistrate Court denied bail to 62-year-old Selma Daniel from Oshiyagaya Village in the Oshikoto Region. Daniel stands accused of abusing a 15-year-old Angolan helper.

Selma Daniel's case was postponed to the 19th of August due to the ongoing investigations, and granting her bail is not in the public interest.

She faces three charges: trafficking, violating the Childcare and Protection Act, and multiple counts of abusing, neglecting and abandoning a child, as well as starving and assaulting her with a stick on numerous occasions.

It's alleged that Daniel abused the 15-year-old girl, who is currently admitted to hospital.

The victim told NBC News that she had allegedly endured abuse from her employer since mid-last year, when she began working as a domestic worker for her.

Her alleged abuse came to light after a video about her condition went viral on social media, prompting police to take action.

She claimed that she was often starved, worked without a break and slept on the floor in a shack without a door for a salary of N$500, which she never got paid.

Daniel, who was arrested at her home on Friday, initially chose to represent herself but later decided to seek legal aid after the court cautioned her that, if found guilty, she could face a fine of up to N$1 million or a prison sentence of up to 30 years.
