Namibian Broadcasting Corporation's reporter Joseph Muyingo and camera operator Rauna Kapenda gauged the views of the students on what independence means to them.

"It's a day that we celebrate, the day our country became free from the oppressive system. I mean, it's not only a day that we celebrate that, but it's also a day that we honour those comrades who have fallen and the ones who fought for our freedom, for us to live free today. And I believe independence is just something that we need to respect because of the fallen soldiers."

"Independence means being free from colonial rule and being able to celebrate what people in the past did for us."

"Independence means to me understanding where you come from, and it's about respecting others because Namibia is a very diverse country with lots of different people and lots of different cultures. And then obviously it's about celebrating Namibia, the freedom we have to choose our own path in life because other people fought for that."

The young people on campus further shared how they are planning to celebrate the upcoming independence.

"I am celebrating with my family, probably. Just, I don't know if it's going to do anything specific, but I think you should just be with your loved ones."

"The way I celebrate independence is just most of the time, I just sit around and reflect on what the soldiers and what the other people in the past did for us, because, I mean, they fought for us; they did a lot for us."
