The Director General of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), Menesia Muinjo, said the national broadcaster is stepping up efforts to support cybersecurity awareness as digital threats continue to grow.

Speaking at the Namibia International Cybersecurity Awareness Campaign launch, Muinjo said that with over 70% of the population being youth, media institutions must prioritise digital content that is relevant and accessible online.

She added that NBC will work with partners to simplify cybersecurity messaging and help Namibians better understand online risks, as cybercrime increasingly affects individuals and businesses.

"That is why NBC has decided to come on board and join hands in this effort that is supporting the national agenda in terms of having safety of what we are doing in the cyber world because we have all become cyber families.

"So that's why it is imperative that we join this initiative and try and save the potential loss that most people, most Namibians, whether you are a pensioner, as it was mentioned there, or a business person or an individual,  prevention is better than cure," she said.

Cybersecurity conference organiser Paulinus Sheehama warned that cybercrime is already costing Namibians millions, with electronic funds transfer fraud reportedly reaching about N$53 million.

He called on banks, businesses and institutions to support new anti-scam technologies, describing them as critical in protecting citizens' finances.

" It is worth noting that while international support and participation have been remarkable,  there is still room for greater involvement from local companies in Namibia. And I want to highlight this to our teaching.

"Since we started, this is our third edition. I will tell you that we are seeing more interest from outside. Other than in Namibia. Now the question is, perhaps it is a question of awareness," he said.

The conference has attracted international technology firms and experts, with a strong push for local companies to participate more actively in strengthening Namibia's digital security.

Organisers said the initiative is not just a campaign but a national movement aimed at safeguarding the country's digital future through collaboration, innovation and awareness.

A cybersecurity conference and exhibition is set to take place on 22-24 April.
