The Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, has motivated the motion on Namibia's accession to full membership of the Maritime Organisation of Eastern, Southern, and Northern Africa.

He said the regional maritime cooperation framework aims to promote safe, secure, efficient, and environmentally responsible maritime transport across the continent.

Nekundi stated that the membership will provide a structured platform through which African, coastal, and inland states collaborate on maritime safety, security, marine environmental protection, capacity building, and the harmonisation of maritime policies and standards.

He further stated that the membership will strengthen cooperation on maritime domain awareness, search and rescue coordination, and the prevention of maritime crimes.

"MOESNA facilitates technical cooperation, training, and knowledge sharing among member states. This will directly benefit our maritime administration, seafarers, port authorities, and related institutions. It will also support regional integration and trade facilitation as Namibia advances its ambition to position Walvis Bay as a regional logistics hub. Alignment with regional maritime frameworks will improve efficiency and interoperability while increasing confidence in our ports and shipping corridors."

Nekundi emphasised that a membership to MOESNA does not compromise Namibia's sovereignty but rather enhances technical capacity and positions Namibia as an active and responsible maritime partner within Africa.
