Former minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ben Amathila has praised the national broadcaster's contribution to nation-building and political stability.
Amathila was speaking during NBC's recent 35th anniversary celebration in Windhoek.
Amathila reflected on key milestones in Namibia's history, including independence and the integration of Walvis Bay, saying effective communication was essential in keeping the country united during the period of transition.
He further stated that broadcasting remains critical in educating citizens and safeguarding the country's history.
"They are educated. They tried to educate at every corner, every moment, for people to accept the new reality. This has never happened before, so you cannot blame anybody, but education and entertainment were very critical at that junction."
The former minister said at the time, many Namibians were entering a new era after independence and needed information to understand the country's changing political landscape.
Amathila has acknowledged the financial challenges faced by the national broadcaster over the years and commended the NBC for continuing to serve the nation despite limited resources.
He said the task of nation-building is not yet complete and called for continued support for public broadcasting.
"It's a great success with very little money; it is really something that we need to be proud of, but if we don't guard and continue informing and taming in such a way that our upcoming generation understands where we are coming from, we are just a small population."
Amathila congratulated the NBC on its 35th anniversary and urged the broadcaster to continue living up to its mandate while preserving the country's history for future generations.
"Unity is critical, and if the NBC can be helped to cement all elements of our population in appreciating that Namibia will only survive if we remain united."
