The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has committed more than N$7 million to commission original local productions under the Mukurob Film Project Phase 2, as the broadcaster intensifies efforts to grow Namibia's creative industry and increase local content.

The announcement was made during the official producer and media signing ceremony for the second phase of the project.

The commissioning editor for NBC, Glendyrr Bailey, said the investment is expected to create jobs across the country's film and television industry.

"To each of our successful producers, congratulations, you guys. Your creativity, dedication, perseverance and belief in your stories have brought you to this stage. Today you become more than just independent producers. You become creative partners. From this moment forward we share one responsibility: to deliver productions that every Namibian can watch with pride and that reflect the quality, professionalism and excellence expected of our national broadcaster."

The commissioning editor also revealed that Mukurob Phase 3 will be announced soon, signalling the broadcaster's continued investment in Namibia's film and television sector.

NBC Director General Menesia Muinjo said the corporation wants more Namibian stories told by local filmmakers and aims to restore NBC's place in households across the country. She also encourages creatives to dream big because of the partnerships the NBC has with broadcasters beyond the borders.

"This is a milestone, and as it was mentioned, especially for the fact that you are going to watch the dramas produced by our own people and guided by the NBC. On the various platforms now on NBC, what is missing is really dramas, so pieces and animation. We don't even talk about it. So we really look forward to having this become a reality. And it was also my dream that starting next year, in the years ahead, we would have a permanent slot of dramas or pieces produced at home."

Acting Chief of Programming Peter Denk said partnerships remain critical to the success of the initiative, describing collaboration between NBC and local producers as key to building a sustainable creative industry.

"Independent producers like yourself play a crucial role in this. You bring creativity, fresh perspectives, and unique voices that help us to connect more deeply with our audiences. Through this partnership, we are not only investing in content; we are investing in people, talent, and the future of Namibian storytelling."

The Mukurob Film Project forms part of NBC's strategy to boost local storytelling, develop industry skills and expand Namibian content across both traditional broadcasting and digital platforms.
