Government has suspended the consideration of all requests for financial support from recognised sport bodies and umbrella organisations due to financial constraints.
The decision was communicated by the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture to the Namibia Sport Commission and takes effect immediately.
The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture has informed the Namibia Sport Commission that it is currently unable to consider requests for financial assistance from the country's recognised sport organisations.
In a letter addressed to the Commission, the Ministry says it is experiencing financial strain and has therefore suspended the consideration of all funding requests until further notice.
The Namibia Sport Commission has been instructed to communicate the decision to all affected sport bodies and umbrella organisations with immediate effect.
The Ministry has, however, indicated that requests for transportation may still be considered.
This will only be possible if the respective sport body agrees to cover all driver-related expenses associated with the transport provided.
The development is expected to have implications for several national federations and sporting organisations that rely on government support for participation in competitions, athlete development programmes and administrative activities.
The NBC Sport Department has also been informed by the Ministry that further clarification on the matter is expected during the course of next week.
NBC Sport has reached out to several sport federations and organisations for comment on the decision.
However, those contacted indicated that they are not in a position to comment on the matter at this stage.
NBC Sport will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
