Namibia's growing technology sector has seen the launch of another locally developed digital platform, with eTaxi Namibia entering the ride-hailing market as entrepreneurs look to use technology to address challenges in the transport sector.

Founded by Namibian entrepreneur Ester Kalangula, eTaxi Namibia is a locally developed ride-hailing app connecting passengers with registered taxi operators.

Taxi operators can list their vehicles on the platform for N$2, allowing passengers to view available taxis, payment options and nearby drivers, while introducing a fare negotiation model between users and operators.

Kalangula explains what inspired the development of the innovation.

"Yes, what inspired me when I was a student many years ago? I used to stand by the roadside waiting for a taxi. Sometimes mornings were early and nights were late, and finally when I got a taxi, the taxi dropped me at the taxi rank, where I had to walk from there to home, which was really not convenient for me."

Software developer Werner Thomas says the technology behind the platform enables communication between passengers and drivers while incorporating features such as trip tracking and driver verification.

"You go on the platforms. You download the app. You enter your cell phone number. You get a one-time PIN. Once you enter in, you select where you want to go. You want to go to Simon's barber. And then you request an offer. And then the taxis around you will just select, 'Oh, there's an offer.' They press on the offer, and then they give you, say, 'OK, no, for this amount, N$12.' Then you choose to accept it. And then you'll be able to see the taxi coming on the way with the numbers and all that."

Unlike traditional fixed-fare transport models, eTaxi Namibia uses a negotiation-based system, allowing passengers and drivers to agree on prices before a journey begins.

Registered driver Shimbango Thomas says the platform has introduced a new way for taxi drivers to operate in an efficient way.

"I am a driver of eTaxi, so we are grateful enough to have this app. Because nowadays the fuel is very expensive, as you see, and the cars are too much of a problem. And the app is a lot; it is more challenging in the industry of eTaxis."
