The community of Mangetti Dune in the Tsumkwe Constituency in the Otjozondjupa Region has earned an income through a sewing project introduced by the UNFPA last year.

The project provides young people with tailoring skills, helping them to make clothes to sell and make income to support themselves and their families.

Six people are currently working on the project, including four women and two men.

One of the Mentors of the Sewing Project Indileni Sakaria explained.

"We are making different types of clothes, including school uniforms. Whenever we sell the clothes, 50% of the money goes into the project's savings, while the other 50% goes to us. For example, if we sell something for N$100, we take N$50. We are happy because this project is helping us with our daily living. We save some of the money in the bank and also use it to buy materials so that we can continue with the project."

Sakaria stated that the project is, however, facing challenges, particularly a lack of transport to sell their products in other villages.

"The only challenge is transport. We always struggle to get a lift to go and sell our clothes in other villages. Sometimes only one person gets a lift and goes to sell the clothes. But because we do not have transport, we sometimes arrive late, and by then the people in the village may no longer have money to buy our clothes.”

The same project is also implemented in the Gam settlement.
