President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has expressed her condolences to the family of the late Helao Joseph Shityuwete. 

President Nandi-Ndaitwah noted that his passing-coming, only a few days after Namibia commemorated Heroes' Day on 26 August, is particularly sad for the nation as it remembers its fallen heroes and heroines. 

On the 26th of August, she said the Namibian nation honoured the brave men and women who sacrificed everything for the country's freedom. 

The President highlighted that Shityuwete belonged to a distinguished generation of patriots whose courage and selflessness shaped the course of the nation's history.

The President said Namibia has lost a distinguished son, a courageous liberation struggle veteran and a lifelong champion of the dignity and rights of workers. 

His life Dr. Nandi-Ndaiwah added, was defined by sacrifice and an unwavering commitment to justice and freedom. 

Nandi Ndaitwah stressed that due to his bravery, Shityuwete endured imprisonment on Robben Island because he dared to stand against oppression. Yet, even in the face of hardship, his spirit remained unbroken, and his belief in the freedom of the Namibian people never wavered.

The statement reads that he fought for justice of labour through his writing and labour rights advocacy, and he continued to serve the nation and helped preserve the experiences and sacrifices of Namibia's liberation struggle for future generations.

In concluding remarks, President Nandi-Ndaitwah reiterated that Shityuwete's passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in the nation's history, adding that he leaves the values for which he stood by and freedom to which he devoted his life to, which will remain his everlasting legacy.
