Learners and teachers from Tsumkwe Primary School gathered at the school to celebrate Heritage Week.
The event included traditional dances from different cultural groups, poems, and art displays showing handmade crafts. 

Learners also took part in reading, spelling, math quizzes, and debates.

Speaking to nbc News, Tsumkwe Primary School Teacher, Lesley Mutjavikua said it is imperative for the younger generation to preserve heritage and culture for the future genrations.

"Let us preserve our heritage, that is all we have, it  is who we are, it is what makes us who we are. From whatever traditional background you come from, your heritage is who you are. The only way to know where we are going is to know where you are coming from."

In addition the school also held a Readathon alongside the Heritage celebrations. 

Mutjavikua explained that activities also helped prepare the learners for a bigger school competition happening next week. 

"Next week Friday, at the same venue, we will be hosting our Readathon Week celebrations. The events that were incorporated today the Grade 4 reading, Grade 5 mathematical quiz, Grade 6 spelling bee, and Grade 7 debate will again be showcased. But this time, it will be at the cluster level, where different schools in the Tsumkwe cluster will compete against one another."

Mutjavikua said  hosting the two events together helped  learners take pride in their culture while doing well in their studies.  
The event concluded with traditional food tasting and cultural exhibitions viewing.
