While some quarters celebrate Independence Day, more than two hundred people living on the outskirts of the Walvis Bay municipality dumpsite say they have little to celebrate as they continue to struggle for survival.

Heavy rains on Wednesday night have left dozens of households in Chotto Compound homeless after floodwaters inundated their homes, ruining food supplies, documents and personal belongings.

Homelessness can be defined as living in a shelter, being in a transitional phase of housing, or living in a place not fit for human habitation.

Sleeping in the open air, riverbeds, building corners, abandoned buildings, and under bridges is an everyday lifestyle for some of Namibia's inhabitants.
