Scores of residents of Keetmanshoop braved the scorching sun as they lined up at the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare's Conditional Basic Income Grant registration.
Residents nbc News spoke to said they started queuing as early as six o'clock in the morning.
The residents later sought refuge from the sun.
The Conditional Basic Income Grant, which is replacing the food bank, aims to provide financial relief to eligible households, which will receive six hundred dollars per month.
The Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare reports that 638 individuals have registered since the process began a week ago in Keetmanshoop.
"I have been here since 06:00 this morning; I was the third person in line, and I am still standing here. There are a lot of people inside. They are going in for the toilets and other reasons, but they are not coming back. I am still here."
Unemployed residents described the initiative as a lifesaver that will alleviate their immediate financial burdens.
