The ||Kharas Region participated in the nationwide tree-planting ceremony, marking the birthday of the late statesman since his death in February this year.
The tree-planting ceremony took place at the soon-to-be-inaugurated ||Kharas Regional Council Office Park.
Speaking at the occasion, both the ||Kharas Governor, Aletha Frederick, and the regional council's chairperson, Joseph Isaack, commended the late Nujoma for sacrificing his early years of life and family in the pursuit of Namibia's liberation.
"Today, we do not merely mark a date on the calendar. We engage in a living tribute. An act that resonates deeply with one of Dr. Nujoma's most cherished passions, the preservation of our environment and the promotion of environmental awareness. It is well documented that our Founding President held a strong conviction regarding the importance of caring for our natural world."
Isaack commented that "His name will still continue with us and the generations to come. Therefore, we have all the reasons to remember him, especially on his birthday. Because today is the day, he was supposed to turn 96 today, on the 12th of May. And we have to bring respect, honour and tribute to this extraordinary human being."
Governor Frederick noted that the planting tree ceremony not only honours Nujoma's legacy but also aims to emphasise the message that environmental responsibility is a collective of all Namibians.
She furthermore highlighted that tree planting is critical for strengthening ecological resilience.
41 fruit trees sponsored by the Watyako Foundation will be distributed across the region for planting.
