The Deputy Chairperson of the Kamanjab Village Council in the Kunene Region, Abiole Karunga, resigned from his party, the Popular Democratic Movement, on Friday.

In a letter addressed to Kunene Regional Coordinator for Kunene South, Lina Uvanga, and seen by nbc News, Karunga tendered his resignation from PDM and subsequently from all leadership positions.

Karunga was a member of the Central Committee, Kunene South Secretary, and Kamanjab Constituency Coordinator.

He also forfeited his position from the Kamanjab Village Council, which he served for five years as a councillor, chairperson, and deputy chairperson.

When contacted by nbc News, Karunga confirmed his resignation and did not cite reasons for leaving PDM, where he has been a member for the past ten years.

The 30-year-old Karunga, who is also a bishop, did not divulge any future plans.

Contacted for a comment, regional coordinator for Kunene South, Lina Uvanga, confirmed receipt of the resignation letter and said it was Karunga's democratic right to seek greener pastures.

She said Karunga will be replaced by the person next on the list, Roswitha Danises, a Kamanjab resident and a community activist.

PDM's Secretary General Manuel Ngaringombe also echoed similar sentiments about Karunga's departure, saying Namibia is a democratic state and Karunga exercised his right to association.

He said efforts to persuade Karunga failed and nonetheless thanked him for his contribution to the party and wished him well.
