Mayeyi Shikati Boniface Shufu has called on the government to consider establishing a village council at Sangwali to bring services closer to the community.

Sangwali is situated 130 kilometers southwest of Katima Mulilo, and it serves as the administrative center of the Judea-Lyaboloma Constituency.

Sangwali is the Royal Headquarters of the Yeyi people, and Shikati Shufu said that land has been availed for the realisation of the project.

Spokesperson of the Mayeyi Traditional Authority, Walter Kamaya spoke on his behalf.
'The Village Council would bring government services closer to our communities and will equally bring about businesses in the areas to cut down the travelling distances to town to access required services.”

Shufu also proposed the establishment of border posts at Kawedumu, which is 70 kilometers to Maun or at Lyanshulu, which is 20 kilometers to Gumare in Botswana.

“I propose the construction of a border post at Kawedumu or Lyanshulu to strengthen ties with Botswana and shorten travel distances for trade, access to health facilities, and family visits. This area is one of the tourist baskets of Namibia and attracts a number of tourists, thus increasing the revenue of the region as an entry point. This link will open markets and deepen cross-border unity.”

Vice President Lucia Witbooi, after engaging with Shikati Shufu, applauded the leadership and their efforts.

“It is pleasing to see traditional authorities taking the lead to ensure that economic developmental activities are increased for the benefit of their citizens and the nation at large. I am proud of the developmental initiatives by the Mayeyi Traditional Authority.”

Witbooi added that the government is committed to bringing more developmental projects to the region.
