Prominent lawyer and former Acting Judge of the High Court,Anne-Doris Hans-Kaumbi, has issued a stern warning about the dangers of illicit enrichment, describing it as a corrosive practice that undermines equitable wealth distribution and hampers national development.

During a recent appearance on nbc's legal program, "The Wheels of Justice" with Daniel Nadunya, Hans-Kaumbi emphasized that the accumulation of unexplained wealth by public or private individuals should not be taken lightly, as it robs citizens of opportunities and weakens the social fabric.

She stated that illicit enrichment is not merely about one individual becoming wealthy unfairly; it disadvantages citizens and obstructs pathways for collective growth and development.

However, amid growing public and media scrutiny of ongoing high-profile corruption cases, Hans-Kaumbi also stressed the importance of upholding the presumption of innocence, a core tenet of Namibia’s legal system.

She cautioned against subjecting accused persons to trial by media, asserting that public discourse must not overshadow the right of every individual to a fair hearing.

She reminded both the media and the public of the sub judice rule, which prohibits commentary that might prejudice ongoing judicial proceedings.

Her remarks come at a time when national attention is increasingly focused on allegations of corruption involving substantial sums of public funds and the conduct of officials in key institutions.
