The Keetmanshoop-based Suiderlig Secondary School's fundraising dinner has raised more than N$800,000 for the renovation and expansion of the school hostel.

Vice President Lucia Witbooi, an alumna of the school, was the guest of honour.

The school hostel was built to accommodate 200 boarders; however, because of its dilapidated state, only 150 currently live there.

The school also plans to expand the hostel to house more learners from surrounding villages and settlements.

Vice President Lucia Witbooi called on the corporate sector to continue partnering with the government in educational infrastructure development.

"We are here to talk about something very important: the renovation of our school hostel to transform it into a space that truly supports our children's learning and personal growth. I am deeply concerned about the dilapidated state of various school facilities, which urgently require renovation. While inspecting the science lab today, I have observed it is outdated and needs modern educational standards," said Witbooi.

Former Ohangwena Governor Usko Nghaamwa and Patron of Suiderlig Secondary School pledged the highest amount of N$330,000.

"Education in Namibia has no limits, unless the parents choose not to send their kids to school. The government already said that every kid has the right to education. I remember that Tate Nahas Angula once said, Education for all. Isn't that right? Education for all. I think people forget. I think some people have forgotten that slogan, and we don't want any kid from Namibia to be left out."

Suiderlig Secondary School's first principal, Maria Kush, and Miss Namibia Johanna Swartbooi also attended the dinner.

The Anglo American Foundation pledged the second highest amount of N$150,000.
